“The Color Purple”
Woman oppression and the mother heritage.

The color purple is a revolutionary book in were the author Alice Walker, expresses the sexualoppression and the lack of rights of woman through Celies struggle combined with other characters personal histories. In were Celie regains thanks to a woman example named Shug Avery. This classic Americannovel, set in the American slavery period, further more explains how black woman are oppressed and denied from their identities, not allowed to create their own personality. Walker, creates a personalconversation in were the character communicates with god using letters, in the beginning been personal feelings and events that Celie is passing through, further expanding to historical context ofrace and class. Since the beginning of the novel we can see the upcoming struggle that is going to have Celie to recover her personal identity from a patriarchal society, in the first letter that shewrites to god we can see the lack of identity that she has generated by the fact she crosses the “I am” in these form the poor identity of her is reflected.
In the context of the novel Celie is showedlike an ignorant, poor and psychological damaged woman. Celie by having these “qualities” has only one sense in life being a domestic woman. She is the oldest woman in her family that’s why after theillness and death of her mother she is in charge of all the responsibilities’ as the one who cleans, cooks, taking care of her younger sister and assuming the place of her mother with her "Pa" beingraped by him. The fact that her "Pa" rapes her is one of the determinant facts that show the patriarchal subjugation of women. The rape is not the key of her lost of personal identity, is the factthat Celie believes that is her "Pa's" right to have sex with her in any way he wants.
