Tourism
Tourism in Mexico is an important economic activity, in 2009 it represented an income of $ 11.3 million USD. In this same year, Mexico received around 21.5 million of international tourists and captured 15.3% ofthe tourist market in America. Mexico ranks first in destination for foreign tourists within Latin American countries and is the third in the continent, behind the United States and Canada. Furthermore is the tenth main international tourist destination (it is noteworthy that in 2004 México ranked eighth). Tourism represents about 15% of direct and indirect jobs in the Mexican economy.
Thestates with the highest receipt of tourism (measured by international arrivals to hotels in Mexican destinations) are: Quintana Roo, Mexico City, Jalisco, Baja California Sur, Sinaloa and Nayarit

In Mexico, the high levels of crime, corruption and impunity have created despair and social unrest.

Past surveys have shown that 4 out of 5 Mexicans believe that the conditions in which we live today are more unsafe than a one year before.

About 27% of the population claims to have lived near a crime, either for having been a member of your family or yourself. This percentage ishigher than the one of 2007. 78% of respondents say that they fear becoming victims of armed robbery and 72% fear to be victims of a kidnapping.

Even though the social unrest is quite palpable, the president has chosen to lead the war against organized crime with the main strategy of a direct confrontation of the Mexican armed forces against the criminals.

In terms of strategy, there areopposing views: On one side there are some who fully endorse the strategy and on the other side there are those who repudiate it completely. In the middle are those who believe that there should only be a different way to approach the fight, for example, by fighting within the financial system.

The facts remain: 47% of respondents consider that the actions set by the federal government to combatorganized crime were a success and 36% said to have been a failure.

There is a decrease from 84% to 74% of the people who agree that the military should fight drug traffic, 39% think that the organized crime is winning the war, and only 37% say the government is achieving its goal.

In conclusion, 42% of the surveys are inclined to think that things will stay the same, 22% think that things willget worse and only 23% think that Calderon will win the war.

The distribution of the crime within the country is seen as follows:

The Interaction between Tourismand Violence and Insecurity
After signing a decree that declared that the year 2011 as the Year of Tourism, President Felipe Calderon warned that the violence of organized crime would not affect domestic and international tourism. He said: "It is clear that affected people are not national or international tourists, in general the stay of tourists in Mexico is enjoyable."
