WESTERN INFLUENCE IN CHINESE CULTURE

INTRODUCTION In the past 20 years, China has been evolving towards thecapitalist model. This project briefly explains the way China has changed through different ways due to the western influence that has got within China, known as a process of “westernization”. These changes are easy to find in regards to specific sectors such as clothing, food, new ways of doing business, Hollywood influence and so on. Western countries are aware of how China is literally joining theworld after having been in a total closeness, and they are taking advantage of this as well as the Chinese are up to the change of their old cultural customs in order to modernize their life style. Westernizing China hasn’t been an easy task due to its cultural and historical background; however the process seems to go well due to the acceptance and good attitude the Chinese are having as well asthe recent openness from the Chinese government to world. China is looking at the future and apparently that future contemplates interaction with many different nations which will be beneficial for the Chinese economy as it will be for the rest of the world. Because of the actual importance of China in many different economic sectors, sharing knowledge with the Chinese will bring enormous benefitsfor the rest of the world as China is one of the most ancient cultures in the world history. As Mao Tse Tsung once said, “Action doesn’t have to become reaction, rather creation”. 3

WESTERN INFLUENCE IN CHINESE CULTURE

CHINA BEFORE WESTERNIZATION China is a really ancient culture; we could say that from the current cultures is the oldest one. This makes talking about a China beforewesternization a really interesting but long topic. In an overall we can say that before westernization China was a parallel world to what we westerners are used to; the Chinese people pay more attention to the harmonious relation between human beings and nature. Much emphasis is laid upon the moral cultivation and temper refinement as well as the spiritual enlightenment on the part of theindividual rather than upon the logic reasoning. For thousands of years China has been under the influence of a holistic system of thoughts, which is largely composed of Confucianism, Taoism and Zhuangzi, as well as Buddhism with Chinese characteristics, among which Confucianism played a fundamental role in shaping the traditional Chinese ideology. Confucianism holds that people should do their duty andfollow their leaders and the gods faithfully. Order is the way to peace. If everyone just does what they are told, and what they are supposed to do, there won't be any fighting and nobody will be upset. Applied to a form of government, which we can see right now in China, this philosophy stresses the importance of education for moral development of the individual so that the state can be governedby moral virtue rather than by the use of coercive laws. In western culture, exactly the opposite is done; “Let it be” and “Land of freedom” are great mottos that describe the way of living as well as governing much part of these countries. Of course that there are rules 4
