Regulus was the Roman senator. In a magnificenthouse did he live. The house was near Nuceria. The people of Nuceria and the people of Pompeii were enemies. The people of Nuceria, because they had no amphitheater, often did come to the amphitheater inPompeii; often was rowdy.

Regulus once presented a splendid show in the amphitheater, because he was celebrating his birthday. Many people of Nuceria therefore came to the city. The citizens ofPompeii were irritated, because the people of Nuceria filled the streets. However all at the forum were content, where the messengers stand. The messengers were announcing the optimum show:

"Thegladiators are here! Twenty gladiators fight today! Retiarii are here! Murmillones are here! Beast fighters hunt the fierce beast!"
