1- Drop the arrogance. Stop thinking you are always right or are anybetter than the marginal people that live in the community

2- Get the right people for your team. Beware of the people that tells you what you want to hear, size uptheir competencies, listening, confronting the boss, managing through systems...

3- Get a genuine interest in the people and the community needs. Research their needsface to face and on the ground, and always walk the talk, under-promise and over deliver

4- Use as rigorous processes to your CSR, as to your core mining ones. Applysix sigma and a organizational excellence approach with a good stakeholders management, talent development and a scorecard to control progress on the social front

5-Start early in your development. Deploy your CSR people early in the exploration phase, building good will right at the beginning of your presence in the area

6-Benchmark. Learn from the best, I spent 20 years with Falconbridge, Noranda and Xstrata and i can recommend looking at their CSR process, look into the Xstratasustainable development standards in their web site and talk to their people in the Dominican Republic, New Caledonia and Raglan, but research other good mining companies too.7- And finally, be patient. There is a lot of damage done in the past, our record is not good, the process of mending things and become sustainable is long term and wein mining may have the pressure of doing things for yesterday. It is like planting trees, the best time to do it was 20 years ago, but the second best time is Now!
